Documentary Director’s Coaching Programme

Content

The Documentary Director’s Coaching Programme offers a series of three residential modules of each 8 to 10 days, combined with an integrated mentoring system running over a period of 12 months.

·         Storytelling and narrative strategies in documentary

April 2005 – Jennifer Fox (USA)

·         Discovery of visual voice and a unique filmic language

June 2005 – Arne Bro (DK)

·         Storytelling in the edit; shaping your film in the cutting room

      October 2005 – Stan Neumann (F)

·         Storytelling in the edit; shaping your film in the cutting room

January 2006 (second opportunity)– Stan Neumann (F)

The programme includes working in an early stage with (research) footage of the project taking into consideration that researching, shooting, selecting and particularly editing images are intrinsically part of the documentary writing process.

The third module – storytelling in the edit – requires a substantial amount of footage and in order to allow for the variations in speed with which each individual project evolves, a second opportunity is offered.

The final coaching activity consists of a visit from the mentor to the cutting room of the participant. This allows the filmmaker to work with his own editor while having input on the rough cut by the mentor. This final mentoring will be considered an integral part of the Documentary Director’s Coaching Programme.

Methodology

The training is project-driven, and aims at strengthening the artistic voice of the filmmaker as well as developing his craft of writing, directing and his industry skills. Small groups allow for involvement in each other's work. It is an important means by which the training evolves: learning by doing and learning by observation. All is directly applied to the project. Upon conclusion of every stage of the training, the participants receive feedback in order to prepare for next sessions.

The structure of the training programme is very much based on the reality of documentary making. It includes in a very early stage (research) footage and allows the projects to develop in different speeds.

Profile applicants
